Again, I’m a lucky girl. My ring was something I hadn’t really thought about, as much as I had thought about him proposing. I’m not much of a real jewelry girl; the few actual silver Tiffany Co. pieces I have sit in a jewelry box. Tarnished to all hell. I prefer loud, crazy, funky, chunky fake stuff. I’m a true believer that jewelry does complete an outfit. So… thinking about wearing somethin acutally valueable that I didn’t buy for under $5 at target was kind of odd.

However, I did always know that when he was ready to propose, he would go to my mom for the diamond. My grandmother had a nice collection of diamonds that she left to my mom, and she told me that they would eventually be mine. I really had no interest in them, imagining dollar bills hanging from my ears that I would be so worried about that I would never move my head. But, I figured they would be perfect for an engagement ring since I probably wouldn’t be using them for anything else, and I loved the idea of having a piece of my grandma with me. She died when I was only 12, but I feel that we would have been kindred spirits had I been old enough to appreciate her.

So one day, a few months before the proposal, I was running errands with my mom and we stopped by our family jeweler. She was having some of my grandma’s diamonds made into earrings. We stopped to pick them up, and she showed me the two diamonds that were “mine” for a future ring. She asked me what I liked, claiming that Matt would come to her some day for help and she would need to know. All the rings I saw on display looked so adult, boring, traditional. So I started looking at the fun cocktail rings they had in a rainbow of colors. I pointed out a few I liked, thinking maybe a colored stone and a diamond would be a little more “funky”, a little more me. Something I wouldn’t feel like I was playing dress up in. My mom showed me the two diamonds I had to choose from, one a little bigger than the other. She figured I would want the smaller one, and was surprised when I said, “how bout both?” Thus was born my unique cocktail ringish engagement ring with two solitaires. Heck, what would I have done with the other diamond in my life?

So with my mom’s knowledge, Matt and her went to the jeweler and designed my ring. Matt had saved for a year to pay for the setting, a pretty big feet considering he was an intern for most of that time, and I had access to all of our bank accounts. Not sure how I didn’t notice. I know he is proud of it; it has a story and meaning which is exactly what I wanted, and it is strikingly different. People stop me all the time and say “wow, how beautiful, it’s so DIFFERENT.” And if you know me, different is possibly the best compliment I could ever get. :)

So here are a few pictures of me and my ring. Fellow blogger/the reason I have a blog/ass saver when I fuck up code/ good friend/co-worker Steph Anne and I had fun taking pictures at lunch in anticipation for our Wedding Wednesday posts. Have I mentioned how lucky I am to have a blog designer in the cube next to me? She’s gonna kill me for posting this pic of her attempting crazy PopBooth photos! Ha! But I really do love the look of the PopBooth app for the ipad, plus we laughed at each other the whole time.

Thanks so much! I know I’m partial, but he definitely did good for a guy… who knew he had so much taste! The only problem with it that I didn’t think of before is that a wedding band doesn’t fit with it, so I will be wearing my band on my other hand.
